Student engagement is an ongoing challenge for high schools, with digital advancements and the pandemic only adding to this. "In 2017 the Grattan Institute report showed that “About 40% of Australian school students are regularly unproductive, bored and struggling to keep up with their peers. Almost half of Australian school students bored or struggling, says Grattan Institute" It is also more predominant in students’ year 9 onwards. Virtual Reality (VR) is a tool that schools and teachers can explore that has a wonderful proven ability to grow your student engagement levels across a many subject areas including STEAM and Career Exploration. Educators know that many students learn best by doing and are more engaged when there is a real-world application to what they are learning. Rarely is this possible in the classroom, yet VR makes immersive learning possible and is complimentary to traditional learning. The outcome is high knowledge retention and higher student engagement. In VR students can solve real world problems. They can see how science is relevant rather than an isolated subject or experiment. For context, imagine students performing virtual heart surgery or a virtual frog dissection in VR, a full body immersive experience where they are learning and doing the experiments in their own virtual surgery – where they can make mistakes, try things out and not worry about what those around them are doing or thinking. They are absent from the science classroom and can be present and immersed in their virtual dissection or surgery – free to learn, fail, explore & try at their own pace.
